A tailored crib skirt — also called a pleated crib skirt, a box pleat crib skirt, or a crib dust ruffle — hangs flat instead of gathered, with pleated center panels on all four sides and split corners that wrap cleanly around the crib legs. Ours are cut and sewn by hand in our Alabama studio from 100% washed cotton, with a 20-inch drop that reaches the floor without pooling on it. Why a pattern needs a tailored skirt: gathering pulls fabric into vertical folds. On a solid that reads as softness, which is exactly what our farmhouse and ruffled skirts are for. On a stripe it turns every straight line into a zigzag, and on a small evenly spaced dot it crowds the spacing until the print goes muddy. A flat pleated panel holds a pattern true from the mattress to the floor — which is why every striped, checked, toile and dotted skirt we make is cut this way.

What drop length do you need? Crib mattresses adjust to different heights, so a skirt sized for the lowest setting will pool on the floor at the highest.
